We at Pinpoint for Health had the opportunity to speak with the President of The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, Michael Tipton.
Under Tipton, the foundation is helping to build a healthier Louisiana through community outreach and charitable giving. They offer grants to different organizations in Louisiana they feel are making a difference in our community.
The Foundation partners with many organizations in our state; their grants in the form of the Challenge Grant, Corporate Sponsorships and the Angel Award are touching our community.
“This year for our Challenge Grant we gave major grants to 12 different coalitions that ultimately work with about 300 different nonprofit organizations,” Tipton says. The numbers stay impressive. According to Tipton, “Our most recent Angels of Change Grant, we gave out 20 grants in Lafayette and to our Angel Awards Program, we gave out 9 nonprofit organization grants.”
He tells us he is particularly proud of the foundation’s Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana Grant. He says the partnerships made through that grant program serve as an example of what the foundation looks for in future partners.
Tipton explains that a focused mission gets the most recognition. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation also looks for very specific initiatives surrounding health education and wants to show measurable success.
“We are looking for clear outcomes that go beyond the story but that really show movement and impact,” Tipton says, “so if somebody says they are going to increase the rate of mentoring in the community, we’re going to care about the number of kids served about how they’re preforming in schools.”
The Foundation grants aren’t the only focus of Blue Cross Blue Shield, the company helps statewide, in almost any way it can.
“On the company side we are probably involved with anywhere from 200 to 400 different types of events or organizations across the state. For us, the interest is in trying to find the intersection of breath and depth, we want to serve all communities in which we work. We are simply trying to find the best ways to be of service to our communities and our partner.”
This is a great example of how partnerships can help your community thrive. The Blue Cross Blue Shield company is a nationwide organization that is genuinely dedicated to seeing progress and improvement in their communities. Partnerships like this truly make a difference, plain and simple.
